Qualifications & Experience


Qualifications & Technical:

  • BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Liverpool University
  • MSc in Brewing Science from Birmingham University. UK. - formally the British School of Malting and Brewing Science
  • One year study at Technical University of Munich-Weihenstephan (Bavarian Brewing School)
  • M. Brew – Master Brewer qualification from the Institute of Brewing
  • Institute of Brewing and Distilling Master Brewer qualification examiner (24 years)
  • FIBD – Fellow of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling

Key Experience:

  • Over 30 years working in larger breweries, including eight years as Head Brewer of Boddingtons. Brewery Manchester (UK) and Stella Artois Brewmaster (UK)
  • 12 years brewing consultancy including work with craft/micro breweries.
  • Extensive experience in micro and industrial scale breweries, brewing both processed and cask beer
  • Brand and recipe development, and flavour matching – ales, lager, specialities
  • International Beer Competition judging, including: World Beer Cup, Brewing Industry International Awards and the Great American Beer Festival
  • Franchise/contract brewing, brewery management, marketing liaison


Qualifications & Technical:

  • M Brew – Master Brewer qualification (and JS Hough Award) from the Institute of Brewing
  • Institute of Brewing and Distilling Master Brewer qualification: current examiner
  • Beer Sommelier

Key Experience:

  • Nearly 30 years working in larger breweries, including Head Brewer or equivalent at Commonwealth Brewery, Murphys, and Tooheys. Former head of New Product Development for Lion Nathan in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Permanent and interim Head Brewer or equivalent roles at smaller breweries: Hillside, Belvoir, and Side Launch Brewing in Canada.
  • Creator and owner of own brand “The Bosbury Brewer” brewing experimental beer in 40 litre batches and selling at Farmers Markets. Design and delivery of food and beer matching events.
  • International Beer Competition judging, including the Australian International Beer Awards, and the International Beer Awards in the UK.
